Town of Hurley Transfer Station going cashless

New year brings new policy
Town of Hurley Transfer Station going cashless

Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, the Town of Hurley Transfer Station, 1043 Dug Hill Road, will no longer accept cash payments for trash disposal.

Instead, Transfer Station permit holders will purchase $20 coupons ahead of time and have the appropriate amount deducted from the coupon during each visit to the site. This change is being made to comply with a New York State Comptroller’s Office requirement.

Also, the fee for trash disposal at the Transfer Station is to rise from the current 15 cents per pound to 20 cents per pound in 2023, pending Town Board approval.

Each coupon will have 50 punch holes worth 40 cents each. This means that if a Transfer Station user brings 20 pounds of trash, for which disposal will cost $4, the user's coupon will have 10 holes punched. When a coupon runs out, a new one will have to be used.

The coupons can be purchased at the Transfer Station or in the Town Clerk’s Office at the Town Hall, 10 Wamsley Place, with a check or money order.

The cost of an annual permit for Transfer Station use will remain $20 for Town of Hurley residents in 2023. The non-resident cost will be $60 per year (up from the current $40), also pending Town Board approval.

The annual permits, like the coupons, can be purchased at the Transfer Station or Town Clerk’s Office, also only by check or money order. A valid address and phone number will need to be provided.

The higher prices are necessitated by the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency charging towns more for waste pickup, and also the Transfer Station’s increased operating costs.

The new coupons and the 2023 permits will be available shortly. (An exact date will be posted when it becomes available.)

Starting in 2023, the Hurley Transfer Station will operate from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Town Clerk’s Office is open for permit and coupon purchases from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
